Class Journals

If there is one thing I have learned from education courses, it is that reflection is one of the most useful tools on my teacher tool belt. Taking a moment to reflect on what went well, what didn't, and how things can be improved can be an invaluable experience. I think these reflection periods are particularly useful when you allow the entire class to have an open dialogue about classroom behavior and class expectations.

Example of one of my class journals:

"I enjoyed today, but I think that is because I think we are talking about some really important concepts that affect us all. I like the material, but I think that moodle posts are a better way to continue this conversation so that we can see what every member of the class thinks, not just the loudest. I think that often those with more controversial or different opinions are hesitant to talk in class, and are more willing to talk online.
I think that we could form an entire class around Freire. The system in place right now is dehumanizing. The WAY people learn seems to be completely ignored. Instead, we have formed a system in which students fear their teachers, and in turn there is very little communication. It's a crazy topic. I look forward to discussing it more. "
